“In-Security” at the Hudson Valley MOCA
The painting Urim & Tumim 5 is on view at the Hudson Valley MOCA’s exhibit In-Security until May 7, 2026. The work captures a moment of rupture and reorientation, when personal, familial, or societal upheavals flood us with overwhelming images and emotions, uprooting perceptions and forcing visions to shift.
Handguns tumble through the sky toward the ancient Urim and Tumim, the mysterious "Lights and Perfections" once embedded in the Israelites’ High Priest's breastplate (Exodus 28). These objects served as oracles, channeling God's will and clarity amid uncertainty, offering revelation and judgment through luminous signs or prophetic insight.
In our current upheaval, war and displacement, I ask myself: when ancient harmonies shatter and the earth shifts, will violence once again serve a larger plan, reshape visions of justice, to uproot darkness and establish a new order?
