“Stanton St. Amulet,” Yona Verwer, Acrylic and metal leaf on canvas, 40” diameter.

About “Stanton St. Amulet”:

Recent waves of anti-semitism have shattered my sense of safety. In the Jewish tradition  amulets often were appeals for safety, health, etc. In my Temple Talismans series apotropaic images aim to symbolically invoke protection for synagogues against attacks.

Based on the Stanton Street Shul, a Lower East Side synagogue, its Star of David window is featured. The building was constructed by immigrants from Galicia; the animal forms are derived from similar Galician designs. For me as an immigrant the Statue of Liberty is an homage to the immigrants from 100 years ago who built the downtown community. The statue symbolizes the freedom of religion in the U.S.A.
